Mass Effect Trivia #2:

Matriarch Aethyta (the asari bartender in the Eternity lounge on Ilium) has a few odd things about her.

At first glance, Matriarch Aethyta is just a regular asari bartender. That is, until you start talking to her. You quickly find out that she has one of the most interesting and colorful pasts of any of the characters in the franchise. Her parents had a long history together (they both fought in the Rachni Wars, on opposing sides, but didn’t know about it for centuries, and when they found out, they killed eachother). She’s had a long life and has been through a lot. However, she notes that she had a pureblood daughter (meaning that she had a daughter with another asari, a practice generally frowned upon in their culture). In the relationship, she was the “father.” However, the relationship with the mother didn’t work out, they went their separate ways, and Aethyta lost contact with her daughter.

Liara T’Soni was raised by her mother, Matriarch Benezia. All she knows is that she is a pureblood asari, and that her parents’ relationship didn’t work out, and as a result of this, she never really knew her “father.” While this heavily implies that Aethyta could possibly be Liara’s “father,” there isn’t any proof. Or, rather, there wasn’t any proof, until the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC came out.

In the Shadow Broker’s video archives, several videos can be seen of Matriarch Aethyta. In one of these videos, she is seen sitting at a table, looking at a photo of Liara. This is almost direct proof, and fills in a lot of gaps, leading us to believe that Liara’s “father” is most likely Matriarch Aethyta.

Another odd thing about Aethyta (whether this is an easter egg, a glitch, or just some sort of weird oversight is unknown), is that if you go to the console at the bar and purchase the “Mystery Drink,” and then speak to Aethyta afterward, her face will completely change, and will instead look like this:
